Other than that it is a brick. as terms of leather low tops, i would say they are more comfortable than reeboks, air force 1s, and dunks. better quality too. since it is a retro style shoe, comfort isn’t gonna be as crazy as boost or any 990 versions of new balance. Hence, popular skate sneakers tend to be rubber with less cushioning. NB is not the best brand for it, but may be, the 550 / 650 with removed insole will work. It look similar to sb dunk and use rubber base sole. However, as it's not build for skater, it still use regular stitching (when double / triple stitching is preferable). 990v3-5 are all really comfortable. I personally don't find the 550s to be comfortable. They aren't uncomfortable, just average. 1080v11 or v12 takes the podium followed by the 990v5. The M1400 comes in third place for me. 993 is the comfiest pair I own. Much comfier than the 990v3’s in my experience.

Not OP, but if you're looking for something somehow similar in comfort and looks, and in the same price range, check out 373. The 608 is an affordable and very comfortable but very ugly shoe. I went and tried some 990v6 recently. I usually wear 11.5 in almost everything I wear. the only shoes I have had to size down .5 size were the NB 550 and the 990v6. I have always gone a half size down with the 998 compared to the 1500. 998 feel more cushy to me but all the models/pairs of both 1500 and 998 end up a little different. I don’t think I will buy another NB shoe in that style. I don’t have any heel slippage in my 574s. They’re a pretty flexible shoe right out of the gate so I’m guessing them may be a little too long for you. Even my 990v5 and 993, both of which are quite a roomy fit for me (which I like), have no heel slippage. Baltimorean here.
